Why you should buy more than just one domain
Right after we decided to go for the company name Motiano, we not only bought the domain motiano.com, but also motiano.cz, mottiano.com and mottiano.cz as well.
You may ask why did you pay for the domains mottiano.com? Is that really necessary? Our answer to that is: You never know. For instance, some people from a completely different country could spell Motiano with a double “t”. Furthermore, someone could start the Mottiano brand (with a double t) and hurt thereby our brand. We prefer to be prepared for anything.
Why did we buy the .cz domains if we are using only the .com domain? Since we are Czechs, we expect that most of our customers will be Czech and some of them might type motiano.cz or mottiano.cz into their browser. Additionally, we might want to start using the .cz domain someday and someone could buy it before we did and use it against us. Maybe we are too precautious, but “better be safe than sorry”. I have seen businesses that struggled with this issue and ended up paying a lot of money to solve it.
To be honest, we figured out that one of our main competitors here in the Czech Republic that creates a really nice motivational diary called Doller didn’t buy the doller.com domain, even though they might want to go international. We saw it free for only 10$ per year and hesitated for a moment if we should buy it or not. We ended up not buying it of course. We would rather become successful in a different way and who knows; maybe we will even find some synergies one day. We envy their work after all.
